Wind and solar power
Installed onshore wind and solar PV capacity (gross, in watts) per inhabitant, 31 December 2025, 31.12.2025
At the end of 2025 the former East had 4,131 watts of wind and solar capacity installed per inhabitant, 2.1 times the West's 1,997 W. Brandenburg leads all states with 7,218 W per head; Berlin has 139 W.

Notes & caveats
- Capacity is our calculation from the Bundesnetzagentur's unit register: all onshore wind turbines and solar PV units with a commissioning date on or before 31 December 2025 and not permanently decommissioned by then, summed by the district of the unit's municipality key. Gross capacity (for solar: module peak power) is used. Offshore wind is excluded because it belongs to no state.
- East, West, Berlin, Germany and state figures are our calculation: capacity ÷ Destatis population on 31.12.2025. District figures divide by the district population on 31.12.2024 (the base the BKA uses), because 2025 district populations were not yet available to us.
- Wind alone: East 1,827 W per head, West 675 W (2.7 times), Berlin 4 W, Germany 816 W. Solar alone: East 2,304 W, West 1,322 W (1.7 times), Berlin 135 W, Germany 1,415 W.
- Hanau (a separate district since 1 January 2026) is shown with the Main-Kinzig-Kreis value: the register still files Hanau's units under Main-Kinzig, and the district population base still treats them as one. A few units carrying the pre-2016 Göttingen key are counted in today's Landkreis Göttingen. 12 solar units (about 50 MW) with neither a municipality nor a state in the register are left out. Units registered late (after the export date) are missing, so the figures may rise slightly in later exports.
- Cross-check: Energy-Charts (Fraunhofer ISE), which uses the Bundesnetzagentur's state statistics, shows 4,038 W per head for the East and 1,962 W for the West in 2025. Our figures are 1–4% higher in almost every state; the likeliest reasons are units registered after those statistics were compiled and a different population base.
- Installed capacity shows where plants stand, not who uses the power: large wind and solar parks in thinly populated districts produce very high per-head values.
