The 1949–1990 border is the line this site is about. But Germany can be cut in many other ways: by scenarios that make distant events tangible, by language, by faith, by how people live. Each map here draws a different line through today's Germany, from data.

Scenario

If Germany were Ukraine

Germany with the same share of its territory occupied as Ukraine: 19.25%, including Crimea. The occupation stays inside the former GDR; Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden fall behind the line.
