About
Why this project
On 3 October 1990 Germany became one state again. Thirty-six years later, the border that ran from the Baltic to the Czech frontier has gone from the landscape, but not from the statistics. Wages, wealth, votes, religion, family life and even leisure still split along the old line.
Germany Divided brings these differences together in one place, using the latest official data, mapped consistently and free for anyone to use. We work with statistical offices, research institutes, archives and associations, and we create our own datasets where official ones don't exist.
